The NX CAM programming software from Siemens PLM is used to create and edit CAD models. These models are used to generate NC operations that produce the real work piece on the machine tool. As with machine tools, NX CAM offers a variety of machining strategies, such as roughing, semi-finishing and finishing. NX CAM provides a wide range of functionality, from simple NC programming to high-speed cutting and multi-axis machining. Such advanced programming capabilities allow one system to address many tasks. NX provides a complete set of numerical control (NC) programming capabilities in a single CAM system as well as an integrated set of manufacturing software applications. These powerful applications facilitate part modeling, tool design and inspection programming – all based on the proven, future-proof architecture of NX.NX allows the use of a common 3D model from part design to production. Advanced model editing, tool and fixture design, part and inspection programming are all associative, enabling fast, easy changes.
NX CAM is an add-on to all versions of CAD SOFTWARE that lets you prepare your designs for manufacturability earlier in the development cycle. Manufacturing tasks that had to wait until a design was complete can now be performed concurrently with the design process.
Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) is the use of software and computer-controlled machinery to automate a manufacturing process. Based on that definition, you need three components for a CAM system to function: Software that tells a machine how to make a product by generating toolpaths.
CAM software prepares a drawing for production, which is considered the last step in the design process. For that reason, you can think of CAM software as “slicer software” that translates drawings and data into detailed instructions to drive an automated tool.
CAM software uses G-code to communicate directly with the control machine. As a programming language generated from a drawing, this G-code “instructs” the tool on what to do. For example, it will tell the motors where to move, how fast to move, and the programmed path they should follow.
Once a designer is satisfied with the design, the CAM software will send all of the above information to the CNC machine to physically produce the part. CNC machines are able to read and understand the numerical code, which is normally converted to electrical signals.
